F1 2017 Testing - Barcelona Day 2

Here are the updates from the Day 02 of the F1 2017 testing.

Morning Session

Haas F1/Autosport

1. The day started off on a positive note for reigning world champions Mercedes with Lewis Hamilton setting the pace for the day. Hamilton, who had originally set a 1.21.766 on the soft tires later lowered the lap times with a rare run on Super Soft tires.

2. Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen was in place of Sebastian Vettel on day 2, running on a similar program as Vettel during the first half of the day. As on day 1, Ferrari looks strong in their runs and also look very good under braking.

3. Force India’s late start to the day didn’t affect them too much as their new driver Esteban Ocon quickly positioned the VJM10 into 3rd after quick laps with soft tires. However, just before breaking for lunch, the car came to a halt past turn 10 bringing out the red flags.



4. Rookie driver Lance Stroll in the Williams completed 12 laps before he spun into turn 9, bringing out the red flags. A high speed run off caused damages to the FW40 which put an end to their morning session earlier than they would have expected.

5. Sauber’s replacement driver for Pascal Wehrlein, Antonio Giovinazzi, could not set representative times due to an engine related delay. He completed 2 installation laps.

6. Stoffel Vandoorne sat behind the wheel for McLaren Honda’s second day of testing. Although he was able to complete 29 laps by mid-day, he suffered a stoppage at the end of the pitlane by the second lap. This meant McLaren had to carry out their second engine change post the loss of power.


Afternoon Session


1. Kimi Raikkonen’s laps during the soft tire stint saw him clear Lewis Hamilton’s fastest lap time set on the super-softs in the morning session. The Finn went on to complete 108 laps in the SF70H without any reliability issues.

2. Valtteri Bottas, who took over Hamilton in the afternoon, completed 102 laps in the Mercedes despite spinning out at T9. Bottas also ran the Double T-Wing (debuted by Hamilton earlier in the morning) for much of the second session.  The drivers have together tallied 168 laps on Day 2.



3. Stoffel Vandoorne continued to drive the McLaren MCL32 in the afternoon after much of the 5 hours were spent in replacing the power unit. Vandoorne could rack up only 11 laps in the afternoon, which added to the 29 in the morning, is McLaren’s most number of laps so far.

4. Kevin Magnussen in the Haas team completed 118 laps, making him the driver with the highest mileage.

Countdown to 2014: end season shuffle shenaniganz

There are a lot of reasons we can rewind and reminisce 2013 season. The last season on the V8 engines didn't go as per planned for most of us because there was one man driving with perfection every race - Sebastian Vettel- he was unbeaten, untouchable and dominant. So dominant to such an extent that Red Bull racing didn't need a Mark Webber to win the Constructors at all!  In other words, this German alone could have been a team and finish 2nd in the constructors and won the driver's all alone. But just behind him, half a lap behind were drivers like Alonso, who himself admitted that   "It's always good to know that you are recognised by your peers," Alonso responded, "but I think 2012 was the best in my career.  This season, there were times when I did not do well enough, such as when I could have had a little more performance, or when I made a mistake like in Malaysia." Hamilton to Mercedes and Perez to McLaren.. A brave move?

All through his career, McLaren has been 'the one'. In December 1995, at the age of 10, Lewis Hamilton approached McLaren Team principal Ron Dennis at the Autosport Awards ceremony and told him, "I want to race for McLaren one day." Nearly, after 14 years of the McLaren team nurturing and establishing Hamilton as 'one the best drivers on the grid', Lewis decides to move to another team in 2013, in sight of a 'new challenge'. That news hit fans like a lightning bolt. Would Lewis' fans shift heir base along with his  move to Mercedes? That same day, news erupted that McLaren have opted to replace Hamilton with Sergio Perez!  It was another dose of lightning strike.
